Monthly Program – August – Laura Jessop | Community Outreach Programs and Education Manager for ANGARI Foundation, Inc.

Laura Jessop is the Community Outreach Programs and Education Manager at ANGARI Foundation, leading its citizen science and outreach initiatives. She engages thousands annually by sharing ANGARI’s hands-on educational programs and studies. With a B.Sc. in Geography, Laura has previously worked in the conservation field with the Zoological Society of London and Local Ocean Conservation in Kenya, and today she continues to share marine science with the South Florida community and beyond.

Citizen science studies enable the public to learn about and participate in investigative science. Since 2017, ANGARI Foundation has led “Lagoon Drift”, a Palm Beach County based citizen science program engaging community members in coordinated releases of eco-friendly drift cards to study the motion of water and pollutants in regional waterways. The program has engaged 5,000+ community members, including K-12 students and teachers, environmental clubs and the general public. To complement the experiment, ANGARI staff visit classrooms to share standards-aligned presentations on topics like ocean currents and marine debris, and review results from past experiments.

SHELL OF THE MONTH AUGUST 2026

Our August Shell of the Month is a set of seven rock snails with the common name of Alou’s Rock Snail. The scientific name was Thais mancinella Linn, 1758 until the scientists determined that it was not a Thais and reclassified it as Mancinella alouina Roding, 1798. Alou’sRock Snail is a predator found in shallow water throughout the tropical Pacific and Indian ocean. It is globular in shape, whitish with regularly spaced dark bumps making for an interesting decoration. These shells are also known as Dog Winkles.  They are about 35 mm and up and were collected by diver on Samar, Philippines at a depth of 4-5 meters. From the collection of Richard Kent.
